5 Tips for a Successful Estate Sale

Some people have an estate sale when they want to de-clutter their home. Others do so because they’re getting ready to downsize. There are also people who schedule an event because a loved one has passed away.

Regardless of why you’re interested in having an estate sale, there are five tips you can follow to improve your chance of success (and an enjoyable experience):

1. Separate Your Belongings

Separate your belongings into two categories:

·      Items you want to keep

·      Items you want to sell

If you’re unable to make a decision right away, start a third pile for items to review again in the future. This should put you on the right path to deciding what to keep and what to part with.

2. Review Your Decisions

Once you’ve slept on your decisions for a night or two, review each pile to ensure that you’re still okay with what you’re selling and what you’re keeping.

Don’t be surprised if you change your mind on some items.

3. Research Price Points

How much is that all-wood dining room table worth? How about that antique statue? What about that lawn mower?

Go through each item, one at a time, with the idea of setting a basic price range. This may change before your event arrives, but it’s nice to have an overall idea of what each item is worth.

4. Hire a Professional

There’s nothing easy about planning and carrying out an estate sale. In fact, if you don’t have any experience, you’ll find it downright intimidating.

Fortunately, you can hire a professional, such as Four Sales, to handle every aspect of the event for you. This includes but is not limited to:

·      Setting up your home

·      Helping set prices for each item

·      Conducting the sale

·      Accepting and managing payments

·      Cleaning after the event (sweeping up)

5. Enjoy Yourself

It may not be your idea of a good time, but an estate sale can be enjoyable if you put your mind to it.

If your home is cluttered, an estate sale will help you reclaim control – and that’s sure to put a smile on your face. And if you’re downsizing, the money you make can help you spruce up your new place.
