Antique License Plates are Stopping Traffic!

Depending on your age, you may have gone through quite a few license plates over the years. While these have only been in production for roughly 120 years, collectors still have plenty of options available to them.

Antique license plates are nothing like the ones you see on the vehicles of today. From the size to the design to the material, there aren’t many similarities. For example, in the early days, license plates were made of wood, metal, or porcelain. Can you imagine having a wooden license plate in today’s day and age?

Recently, a Hartzell’s Auction Gallery sale auctioned more than 250 antique license plates. Prices range from $18 on the low end all the way up to the $418 sale of a porcelain 1914 West Virginia plate.

The cool thing about collecting license plates is that there are so many different options, especially when you go back 120+ years. For example, you may want to chase after the rarest license plate ever – Alaska 1921. Or perhaps you’re only interested in plates made from a certain material or a particular state.

As a lower-priced collectible, a growing number of people have come to find joy in adding to their collection.

If you’re interested in adding to your collection, start your search online and at local estate sales and flea markets. You never know when you’ll come across a unique antique plate that you’ve been wanting to add to your collection.
