Found Civil War Headstone To Be Returned by Four Sales

Alexandria, VA –

While recently picking up an auction consignment at the Clinton, Maryland estate of Guy L. Schultz, representatives of Four Sales, an Estate Sale business in Alexandria, Virginia and Pete’s Auction Services in Madison, Virginia, found a Civil War grave marker.

Knowing that the tombstone was of historical significance, Daniel Sanders, President of Four Sales, dug in to learn more about this mysterious headstone and the soldier whose grave it once marked. Research revealed that this headstone was missing from the Civil War Cemetery at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. It marked the grave of allegedly “insane” fifteen-year-old soldier, Jordan Mann, who was transported from the field to St. Elizabeth’s medical facility (which was a mental health facility during the Civil War) in April 1864.

No one seems to know how this marker came to be a part of this Maryland estate. However, it was clear to both Mark Schultz, heir to the Guy L. Schultz estate, as well as Daniel Sanders, Four Sales, and Pete Elliott of Pete’s Auction Service, that an item of this historical significance should be returned to its rightful place at St. Elizabeth’s. Four Sales has been working with the GSA (Government Services Administration) to affect the return. The physical return will take place during the upcoming Sesquicentennial celebration of St. Elizabeth’s on November 7, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Interested parties should meet at St. Elizabeth’s West Campus, at “The Point,” located at 2701 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SW, Washington, D.C., 20032.

Additionally, Mr. Sanders agreed to make a donation on behalf of the Schultz family to their charity of choice. Mark Schultz selected P2V (Pets2Vets), an organization that donates pets to veterans suffering with war-related injuries and illnesses.

According to Sanders, “We believe this is a great “final chapter” to Jordan Mann’s journey. “We will honor a veteran of the Civil War by supporting today’s veterans.”

Representatives from P2V have been cordially invited to attend the ceremony, along with representatives from Four Sales, Pete’s Auction Service, and the heirs of Guy L. Schultz. The GSA has requested a list of those who will be there to ensure adequate seating for all guests.
