Hello, good buy: Tap into L.A.’s estate-sale scene

Vicki Nelson was leaving an estate sale with an opera score for her son when the Santa Clarita woman decided to give him a call. “Oh yeah, they had a whole bunch,” she told the opera student, who demanded his mother go back for the rest. She paid $15 for the entire lot.
“When I got home, I called my son and started naming off the scores,” she says. “He said, `Mom, you just saved me $1,000.”‘

Estate sales are treasure troves for anyone trying to save a buck or make one through resale. Unlike yard/garage sales where people unload things they’ve outgrown, estate sales are property liquidations usually brought on by death, divorce or downsizing.
