The Many Myths of Antique Collecting

When it comes to antique collecting, there is a world of opportunity. This holds true regardless of what you are collecting, where you live, or how much money you have in your budget.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few myths that hold some people back from reaching their goals as a collector.

Here are several myths of antique collecting that you should be aware of:

1. All antique collectors are in an “older age bracket.” Who made up this myth anyway? Your age has nothing to do with your love of collecting. From teenagers all the way up to those pushing the century mark, this can be a great hobby. Don’t let anybody tell you that you have to be a certain age to collect antiques.

2. Finding that “rare piece” is impossible. Nothing is impossible in the world of antique collecting. If you have your eye on a particular item, regardless of how rare it may be, you should continue your search. After all, this is a big part of what makes collecting so much fun. Setting your sights on something big will keep you motivated.

3. You need to be rich to be an antique collector. This is 100 percent false. It doesn’t matter if you are collecting antique chinadolls, or something else, each item holds its own value. You may not be able to afford those at the upper end of the market (just yet), but this shouldn’t stop you from collecting what you can afford.

Final myth: the best antiques are found, not purchased. There is no denying the fact that many of the most valuable antiques have been discovered in an attic or basement. But does this mean there is no hopes of buying what you have been looking for? Of course not.

For example, you can scour local estate sales as you look to add to your collection. You never know what you are going to find, as long as you are willing to look.

As an antique collector, you should never let these myths stand in your way. After all, they are just that: myths.
