The Right Way to Update Your House Before You Sell

Before putting your house on the market, there are many thing you should do to get buyers interested faster. Even if you don’t have an eye for interior design, there are easy fixes to make your home more appealing. It is often advisable to ask a realtor or someone who stages homes to take a look because there are often things we miss in our own homes that will turn off buyers.

Regardless of how you go about staging your home, here are a few basic items to check:

Clean and Declutter

When buyers come into your house, they are going to be looking with a critical eye. They want to know how the house was kept up and how much work they are going to have to do upon moving in. An easy way to ensure your house looks as appealing as possible is to get it spic and span.

  • Clean up those bathroom walls. Get rid of any surface mold around shower walls by mixing one part bleach and one part water in a spray bottle. Then, spray down the spot and scrub with a brush if necessary. Once it is all gone, cover the walls with a coat of fresh paint.
  • Declutter. We all accumulate a lot of stuff over the years, but potential buyers don’t want to see your clutter. This can make the space look small and dirty. You also may want to remove your personal items. Buyers want to imagine their own things in the space, and that is very difficult to do if there is too much stuff in the way.
  • Don’t forget baseboards and ceiling fans. You may not think about these areas, but scratched and dinged up baseboards and dusty ceiling fans are incredibly unattractive. They won’t want to replace baseboards if they are in bad shape. And, they might think you didn’t take care of the home if furniture is dusty.

Arrange to Sell

Contrary to what you may have heard, pushing furniture against walls to make a space look bigger doesn’t benefit the room. Instead, set spaces up with the function of the room in mind. In living rooms, for example, arrange furniture to be conducive to conversation. This way potential buyers can imagine hosting events with family and friends in the house.

Lighting Is Important

Home buyers want to see bright, airy spaces, and using natural light is one of the best ways to get your house sold. Depending on the way your house faces, you will have different levels of sun exposure during the day. So, if you have a lot of sun exposure, you might want to use sheer shades or light color blinds to diffuse light and keep the room cool. If you don’t have a lot of natural light, keep blinds open and don’t be afraid to use lamps to add light to the room. In addition to their primary function, blinds and drapes can add a decorative touch and make the room feel more homey. Just remember, most buyers like a light, neutral and minimal look.
